Do Work Around the House for a Mental Break: Working from home is probably taking a toll on the lot of us at this point. Not because it isn’t productive, but because it is mentally draining. We all need to feel moments of accomplishment throughout our day and week.. “I am going to celebrate my achievement of 10 conference calls today!” Said no one ever. The work we are doing leaves many of us feeling a bit uninspired and drained. This is because we aren’t focused on celebrating the right wins, nor are we allowing ourselves to take the breaks like we should. We just keep plowing through those 10 conference calls each day.

For me, I do work around the house on Saturdays and I love it. I love it because I can actually see the results of my hard work. Tangible results make me feel accomplished. But in a world where the majority of what we are doing is virtual, how can I create tangible results?  How do I setup that type of achievement and accomplishment during my remote work? 

For me, I need to create specific milestones to celebrate each day. I have gotten away from that and need to get back on track. I don’t need to celebrate the 10 calls, I need to celebrate the work we accomplished on the calls.  So, focus less on the physical work, more on the mental achievements.  

I have been and will continue, without guilt, to allow myself to do chores around the house during my daily mental break times. I’m going to unload the dishwasher after I finish 2 conference calls. Or start the laundry before I start on that next work project. Or I’m going to step outside and check the pool just to stretch my legs for a bit and clear my head. I allowed myself to walk around, stretch, and clear my head at the office. Why not allow myself that at home?  At the same time, why not allow myself to do something during my mental break that gets tangible results?

 My challenge for you today is to think about what milestones you can add back to your day in order to celebrate the work you are truly accomplishing.. And, decide what household activities you will do to that will serve as breaks and accomplishments.
